The first tour behind No One Listens To The Band Anymore is now complete. Big thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed themselves. It was a blast playing with the Harper Blynn guys. That was the first of many more Damnwells tours for 2011. Luxembourg, here we come! Check out the tour page on our site for some recently announced dates.

During the course of recording and releasing the album, we made a number of videos. Now, it’s your turn! We’re holding a contest for a fan-directed music video. Choose a song from the new album and make a music video. Be creative – we’re looking forward to seeing what you can come up with. Sadly, none of the band members are able to appear in the video (unless you turn them into puppets…), but don’t let that stop you from creating your masterpiece.

Create your video and upload it to YouTube or Vimeo (please do NOT send us the actual video file!), then send the link to damnwellsvideo@gmail.com no later than end of day, May 20th. From there, we’ll pick the best video and post it online for the world to enjoy. Just remember to thank us when you win the Oscar. Good luck!

No One Listens to the Band Anymore
(Poor Man Records)

The Damnwells’ combination of tenacity and tenderness has never been more striking than on their latest album, the strangely dubbed opus, No One Listens to the Band Anymore. The fact is, this offering ought to get the fans listening intently, what with its rollercoaster of emotion and a stirring determination that asserts both their authority and defiance.

The Damnwells Just Keep Getting Better

For nearly 10 years, the Brooklyn/Iowa-based band The Damnwells has been perfecting the art of melodic roots-rock. Singer-songwriter Alex Dezen and founding bassist Ted Hudson are all that remain of the band’s initial lineup, but what the group lacks in members it makes up for with first-rate musicianship. As the old adage says, its quality not quantity. The duo’s fourth album, No One Listens To The Band Anymore, is arguably their best and and another step forward for a band that seems to do little to anything wrong.

No One Listens to the Band Anymore is ironic title of The Damnwells newest release. The Damnwells worked with Pledge Music, an organization that allows fans to directly fund the musical efforts of their favorite artists, in releasing their fourth LP. Werewolves and the Great Unknown were pre-released via the Damnwells Youtube page. NOLTTBA remains loyal to the indie/folk-rock sound that lead vocalist Alex Dezen and bassist Ted Hudson established with their first album, Bastards of the Beat (2003). Each of Dezen’s personal and reflective verses are accompanied by simple melodic instrumentation (and sometimes the back-up vocals of Dezen’s wife Angela).

SXSW preview: The Damnwells

Musician Alex Dezen releases his new album under The Damnwells moniker today (Tuesday, 3.15.11). After label deals with Epic and Rounder, the band opted for a less traditional route for its new album: No One Listens To The Band Anymore was funded completely by the band’s fans via PledgeMusic. No One Listens To The Band Anymore contains some of Dezen’s best songwriting to date (on “Werewolves” and “The Same Way”), and while the band created the album without label influence or interference nothing in its sound seems to have changed.

I’ve also been listening to No One Listens To The Band Anymore, the new album by one of my favorite bands, The Damnwells. I found them on one of my many Itunes music browsing sessions when I had ample time to do so, circa when their album Bastards of the Beat came out in 2003. I think “Kiss Catastrophe” is what compelled me to go out and buy their music immediately after listening, although “Newborn History” or “Electric Harmony” could have equally been the culprits.

Every band that sets up in the basement or garage has the dream of getting that big shot: opening slots on bills with your heroes, rock stardom…a major label record deal.

The Damnwells have lived that dream, opening on tours for bands such as Cheap Trick, signing deals with Epic records and recording big budget albums. The lead singer of the band, Alex Dezen, also holds one of my favorite rock and roll moments- watching him sing “Surrender” with Cheap Trick , his face frozen in a grin like a child who has met Santa…

About The Damnwells :

Coming off a transitional year for the band, The Damnwells are set to release No One Listens to the Band Anymore, an album funded entirely by fans through PledgeMusic.com. The album contains twelve new Damnwells songs recorded in Chicago with producer Neal Ostrovsky.

The band has been referred to as a collaborative of great musicians and producers working with songs by lead singer/songwriter Alex Dezen. Dezen and Ted Hudson are the only two musicians who have remained a constant presence in the band over the years.

No One Listens to the Band Anymore was written while Dezen was participating in the famed Iowa Writers’ Workshop, getting his MFA and teaching at the University of Iowa. Writing songs so far from the music business – both physically and emotionally – provided Dezen with a fresh perspective that can be heard in the realness and authenticity of the songs.
